Trump Calls for Death Penalty for New York Attacker

WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump asked on Thursday for a death penalty for Sayfullo Saipov, an alleged terrorist and Islamic State sympathizer, who killed eight people in a multiple hit-and-run in New York City.

“NYC terrorist was happy as he asked to hang ISIS flag in his hospital room. He killed 8 people, badly injured 12. SHOULD GET DEATH PENALTY!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

Saipov was shot and wounded by the police after running over dozens of people and is currently under police surveillance at a hospital in New York.

During his first interrogation at the hospital, the alleged attacker asked for a flag of the IS (also known as ISIS) terror group to be placed in his room, while showing no sign of remorse for the attack that occurred.

The State of New York does not have the death penalty, however, a federal trial could hand Saipov a death sentence on charges related to terrorism.

One of the attackers behind the Boston Marathon bombings, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was given a death penalty by a federal court as the State of Massachusetts does not carry out the capital punishment.
