Cyclists Promote Exercise and Environmental Protection in Uruguay’s Capital

MONTEVIDEO – A Uruguayan cycling group organized a program of activities this weekend in Montevideo’s Parque Rodo to promote exercise, stress reduction and environmental protection.

The Ciclovida group staged the event as a demonstration of what it plans to do starting next month, when the cycling organization will take over management of the park for 18 months, Gustavo Izus, one of the event’s organizers, told EFE.

Ciclovida wants to promote a healthy lifestyle, exercise and social awareness of climate change and other environmental problems, Izus said.

People attending Saturday’s event at the park were offered cycling classes for children, cooking courses, circus acts and a screening of the film “Bikes vs. Cars.”

Ciclovida plans to offer bicycle rentals at the park and reintroduce pedal boats.

“We’re negotiating with the (Montevideo) mayor’s office to see if we can bring in some pedal boats, which is what people are asking us for,” Izus said.
