Uruguay's Mujica Reacts to Trump Victory: "Help!"

MONTEVIDEO - "Help!" was the response of Uruguayan former President Jose Mujica on Wednesday to news that Republican Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election.

"I will say only one word - one - and with this I summarize it all: Help!," he said from Italy in an interview with Radio Uruguay.

Asked if he was surprised by the outcome in the U.S., Mujica, who led Uruguay between 2010 and 2015, replied: "bad news is always surprising."

Mujica, known for his bluntness and candor, said before the election that he was not afraid of Trump but rather "of the people who accompany him," apparently alluding to white supremacists and xenophobes among the Republican's partisans.

Trump "will pass, but those people will stay there," the Uruguayan said.
