Uruguay Welcomes German President

MONTEVIDEO – Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez on Friday welcomed German head of state Joachim Gauck with full military honors.

Just before the reception, Gauck laid a wreath at the foot of the statue of Uruguayan national hero Jose Gervasio Artigas in Montevideo’s Plaza Independencia.

The two presidents reviewed a military honor guard and greeted members of Uruguay’s German expatriate community before holding private talks.

Students of the German School in Montevideo also attended the ceremony, which came on the second day of Gauck’s official visit to the South American nation.

On Wednesday, Gauck visited the Uruguayan Supreme Court and met with chief justice Ricardo Perez Manrique.
