Uruguay Hosts Regional Forum on Youth

MONTEVIDEO – Dozens of officials and experts from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay gathered on Tuesday on the campus of the University of the Republic for the start of a forum focused on the challenges facing the region’s children and adolescents.

The two-day event aims to address topics such as employment, public education and public safety.

Roughly 20 percent of Uruguayan youth live in poverty, even though the country’s overall poverty rate has declined from 38 percent to 10 percent since 2005, Vice President Raul Sendic said in a speech inaugurating the conference.

Two analysts from the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, Victoria Tenenbaum and Maira Colacce discussed the results of study showing that 46 percent of Uruguay’s public spending on children and youth is directed to education.
