Uruguay Commemorates World Blood Donor Day with More Than 70 Events

MONTEVIDEO Uruguay commemorated World Blood Donor Day on Tuesday with a series of blood collection events across the country aimed at promoting the need for more voluntary blood donors, National Blood Service director Lourdes Viano told EFE.

The main portable blood collection center was set up at the National Palace in Montevideo to encourage citizens to give blood.

The event was organized by the Association of Voluntary Donors and the State Health Services Administration, which oversees the National Blood Service.

Viano said there were 73 hemotherapy service centers in Uruguay, both public and private, and all of them were collecting blood on Tuesday to commemorate the international day.

About 50 percent of donated blood in Uruguay comes from volunteer donors, while the other half comes from relatives or friends of people in need of blood.

The goal is to get 100 percent of blood donations from volunteers, Viano said.
