MONTEVIDEO – A 37-year-old Uruguayan soldier deployed with the UN peacekeeping force in Congo has died of malaria, army spokesman Col. Yamandu Lessa told EFE.
Pvt. Marcelo Peña Pellejero was admitted to a Kinshasa hospital with symptoms of malaria on Dec. 24.
The remains of the soldier, who had 18 years of military service and had been deployed in Congo for nine months, will be repatriated.
The Uruguayan army has about 1,000 troops in Congo along with navy and air force units assigned to the peacekeeping force in the African country since 2000.
No date has been set for the end of the mission.
