Bomb Scare Forces Evacuation of Uruguay Office Complex

MONTEVIDEO – Montevideo’s World Trade Center was evacuated on Thursday after authorities found what appeared to be an explosive device, the Uruguayan Interior Ministry said.

An analysis carried out remotely using an army robot confirmed that the object had all the elements of an explosive device, including a detonation cord, fire department spokeswoman Alda Machado said.

Members of the Republican Guard discovered the object early Thursday during a routine patrol around the office complex, where the Israeli Embassy is among the tenants.

Around 100 Republican Guard, firefighters and army troops were deployed to the scene.

After evacuating the World Trade Center, the security forces established a security perimeter extending 100 meters (328 feet) out from the building.

The fire department’s hazardous materials team then arrived and conducted a controlled detonation of the device.
