Bolivia Expands Gas Pipeline Supplying Capital Region

LA PAZ – Bolivian state oil company YPFB inaugurated on Tuesday a pipeline expansion that will double the amount of natural gas supplied to this capital and the nearby industrial city of El Alto.

The $62 million project was formally delivered in a ceremony at a gas plant in El Alto.

President Evo Morales, Vice President Alvaro Garcia Linera and Energy Minister Juan Jose Sosa were on hand to hear YPFB chief Carlos Villegas explain that the expansion will allow for the doubling of gas supplies to the La Paz-El Alto area, from 34 million to 68.5 million cubic feet per day.

The additional supply “gives an absolute guarantee to families, transportation, commerce and industry” in both cities, Villegas said.

The bulk of Bolivia’s massive reserves of natural gas is located in the country’s eastern lowlands. EFE
