LA PAZ – One person was killed and eight others wounded in a robbery on a Bolivian highway near the border with Peru, the police commander in La Paz province, Col. Rosalio Alvarez, said.
The incident occurred in the wee hours of Monday along the stretch of road between the towns of Pumasani and Wilakala, Alvarez told Erbol radio.
An armed group traveling in two cars and two ATVs intercepted two public buses at the spot while the latter were en route to La Paz.
According to the preliminary police report, the robbers fired on the buses to force their drivers to stop, whereupon they robbed the passengers of any items of value.
One man was confirmed dead and identified by media outlets as Angel Galileo Macuri, while some of the wounded were transported to hospitals in nearby towns and others to the capital.
Alvarez said that similar attacks had been registered in the area “but not with the violence that occurred today.”
A group of police officers was sent to the scene of the crime to investigate. EFE
