LA PAZ – Eight people were killed and 10 others injured when a bus collided with a van on a highway in southern Bolivia, authorities said.
The accident took place Monday afternoon near the town of Patacamaya, 104 kilometers (65 miles) southeast of La Paz, police Col. Victorino Torres told the media.
The bus, which was headed south to the Chilean port city of Iquique, strayed into the northbound lane and collided with a van traveling from Patacamaya to La Paz, according to the preliminary report.
All eight people in the van, including a 1-year-old child, were killed in the crash, Torres said.
The injured were initially taken to a clinic in Patacamaya and then transferred to a hospital in El Alto, an industrial city neighboring La Paz.
Around 1,000 people die and another 40,000 are hurt on Bolivia’s roads every year. EFE
