LA PAZ – At least nine people died and four were injured on Monday when the bus in which a Peruvian band was apparently riding went off the road and into a ravine in the western Bolivian zone of Los Yungas, authorities said.
Col. Julio Cruz told media outlets that the vehicle plunged into a ravine 100 meters (about 330 feet) deep at a spot known as Velo de la Novia, where a small waterfall crosses the road.
The accident occurred on Monday morning when the vehicle was traveling between Coripata and La Paz, Cruz said.
A fire rescue commander told EFE that authorities would continue working at the crash site to recover bodies and that it had not yet been possible to confirm the identities of the dead.
The media reported that the bus was transporting the Peruvian band Elegancia, which had made a tour of Los Yungas.
An official with the Arco Iris Hospital in La Paz said a 10-year-old boy and two adults with multiple injuries, along with another adult with serious injuries requiring urgent surgery, were brought to that facility.
The crash occurred along the so-called “Highway of Death,” a treacherous road that snakes along beside deep ravines.
Accidents on Bolivian roads take an average of 1,000 lives each year and injure some 40,000 people, according to official figures.
