Bolivian Lawmaker Suspended over Domestic Violence Charges

LA PAZ Ė Marin Sandoval was removed on Tuesday as speaker of the legislature in Boliviaís La Paz province and suspended from his seat pending a verdict on charges he hit his girlfriend.

Gustavo Torrico, Sandovalís colleague in the governing leftist MAS party, told the media that the majority of the lawmakers decided to remove the accused from the speakership and temporarily suspend his ability to occupy his seat until the case against him is resolved.

The resolution was made despite the fact that Sandoval appeared on Monday at a press conference together with his girlfriend, a woman of 20 who is also his secretary, to apologize for the attack, the marks of which could still be seen on her face.

The victim accepted Sandovalís apology and dropped her formal complaint with the authorities regarding the beating, although Bolivian law in these cases obliges authorities to investigate the matter even though no criminal complaint exists.
