LA PAZ – Five people were killed and six others injured on Monday when a van collided with a military vehicle in the eastern province of Santa Cruz, Bolivian authorities said.
The accident took place on the road between Montero and Portachuelo, highway patrol district commander Ronald Raña told ATB television.
Killed were the driver and four of the five passengers in the van. The fifth passenger and five servicemembers traveling in the military vehicle were hurt.
Investigators suspect the driver of the van fell asleep, allowing the vehicle to veer into the opposing lane and smash into the army truck.
Road accidents are blamed for an average of 1,000 fatalities a year in Bolivia, while another 40,000 people are injured, according to official statistics.
