LA PAZ – A total of 6,974 liters (1,842 gallons) of diesel and 510 liters (135 gallons) of gasoline being smuggled from Bolivia into Chile were seized by army troops and drug enforcement agents, the official ABI news agency reported.
The fuel and several vehicles were seized in a joint operation conducted by the army and the FELCN drug enforcement agency, ABI said, citing a National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH) statement.
Authorities in the border region have determined that “groups and clans have established themselves there to gather fuel and move it in different ways into neighboring countries,” ANH fuel interdiction division chief Jaime Cuellar said.
The ANH has a tip line that allows the public to report fuel hoarding and illegal shipments.
Bolivia’s government heavily subsidizes fuels and prices have been frozen for nearly a decade.
