Policeman with Bolivian Presidential Detail Dies in Traffic Accident

LA PAZ – A policeman assigned to the advance unit providing security for Bolivian President Evo Morales was killed in a traffic accident Monday on an Andean road and five other officers were injured, the President’s Office said in a communique.

Cpl. Rider Avendaño Sanchez died about 7 a.m. local time when the truck he was riding in with other officers collided with a tractor-trailer near the town of Ojoya while en route from La Paz to the Oruro region.

According to the President’s Office, the driver of the tractor-trailer apparently “stopped suddenly” on the road, causing the accident.

The officers were heading to Oruro, where Morales is scheduled to inaugurate a sports stadium.
