LA PAZ – At least 10 people died Monday in Bolivia and another five were seriously injured when a van crashed into a tractor-trailer on the expressway between the cities of La Paz and El Alto, Bolivian police said.
The accident occurred at dawn on an exit ramp, deputy commander Carlos Clavijo told the media.
A transit authority official said later that eight people were killed instantly and another two died after they were taken to hospital.
All the fatalities had been traveling in the van, which was carrying 15 people.
The other five passengers of the vehicle are seriously injured.
Authorities are investigating the causes of the accident, though Clavijo thinks it probable that the collision was due to a brake failure of the van, which, according to witnesses, was being driven at high speed and went out of control.
During the same morning another 21 people were injured when an intercity bus ran into a boulder on the highway between Caranavi and La Paz.
