VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis I on Saturday expressed his sorrow upon hearing about the death of Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.
The pontiff offered his condolences to the brother of Fidel Castro, current president Raul Castro in a telegram sent from the Vatican.
“Having received the sad news of the death of your dear brother, his Excellency Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz, ex-president of the Council of State and the Government of the Republic of Cuba, I express my feelings of sorrow,” the telegram said.
Pope Francis said he would pray that Castro could rest in peace and would entrust Cuban people to Our Lady of Charity of Copper, the Patroness of Cuba.
Castro died late on Friday at the age of 90. The news was announced in an address on state television shortly thereafter by Raul Castro.
