South Korean Patrol Boat Joins Peruvian Navy Fleet

LIMA The Peruvian navy has added the patrol boat Ferre to its naval fleet after striking an accord with the South Korean navy for its transfer, an official statement said Saturday.

Taking part in its incorporation ceremony on Friday were Prime Minister Pedro Cateriano, Defense Minister Jakke Valakivi and navy Commander Edmundo Deville del Campo.

Cateriano noted that the incorporation of the Ferre is added to acquisitions from other governments like the Netherlands and Canada, while Valakivi said the patrol boat will allow Peru to comply with international laws and agreements on maritime surveillance.

The patrol boat, built by the shipyard of Hyundai Heavy Industries Ltd. in 1985 and totally modernized before its delivery to Peru, will have the mission of exercising control and surveillance on all activities in Peruvian seas.
