One Dead, 12 Injured in Chile Prison Brawl

SANTIAGO – A brawl between rival gangs in a Santiago prison left one inmate dead and at least 12 injured, law enforcement authorities confirmed on Monday.

The fight broke out at La Penitenciaria, a prison located near the capital’s downtown.

“About 2:40 p.m., there was an incident inside Cell Block 9 and, there, a brawl broke out with several participants (resulting in) one person dead and about 12 injured,” Maj. Andres Texido, of Chile’s Carabineros, or militarized police, told reporters.

“There are people in the prison hospital and there are other people who were transported to different Santiago hospitals, in accord with the seriousness of this situation,” he added.

Nine of the more seriously injured inmates were taken to the exPosta Central – an urgent care medical center – and to the Barros Luco Hospital.

Personnel from Chile’s Gendarmeria, or national prison service, mounted an intensive operation that isolated the inmates involved in the fight and identified the leaders of the riot with an eye toward placing them at the disposition of the Public Ministry.
