SANTIAGO – A 47-year-old Spanish hiker crossing the Andes mountain range has been rescued by the air force, the Chilean military said Tuesday.
At 1:45 p.m. Sunday, elements of the 2nd Aerial Brigade were able to rescue Jose Antonio Ruiz Vergara, the air force said in a statement.
The hiker, who lost his way around noon Saturday, was located near the Andean peaks of Provincia and San Ramon east of Santiago, at an altitude of some 3,000 meters (9,800 feet).
Ruiz Vergara was flown in a Bell 412 helicopter to a public hospital, where he received specialized attention by emergency management personnel.
In the Southern Hemisphere fall and winter, the route between the Provincia and San Ramon mountains tends to be more difficult due to the amount of snow that piles up there. The weather is also less stable at this time of year and the nights draw in much earlier.
