Toddler Survives Fall from 11th Floor in Chile

SANTIAGO – The 3-year-old son of a Moroccan diplomat remains hospitalized in critical condition after surviving a fall from the 11th floor of the building where his family lives in Santiago, Chilean police spokesmen said Thursday.

The child fell from a balcony on Wednesday in the Las Condes neighborhood, landing on a car parked next to the building, eyewitnesses said.

“The boy fell into the visitors parking lot, hitting the windshield and bouncing onto the ground,” Carabineros militarized police spokesman Pablo Silva told reporters.

“We immediately called for an ambulance, which arrived quickly, and after first aid was administered, the victim was transported” to a hospital, Silva said.

“We escorted the ambulance to Clinica Alemana, where he arrived alive,” the police spokesman said.

The father said the child’s mother was in the kitchen and the toddler “climbed up on something and reached the balcony’s railing.”

The child is in the pediatric intensive care unit in critical condition, clinic spokesmen said.
