Argentina Signs E-Commerce Agreement with China’s Alibaba Company

BUENOS AIRES – Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri met on Tuesday in Buenos Aires with the founder and owner of the Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba to finalize an agreement for the marketing of fresh foods, wines and winemaking products produced in this country, officials said.

Macri and Chinese entrepreneur Jack Ma gave the go-ahead to a pilot project between the Asian giant and the Argentine International Investment and Trade Agency to promote the online marketing of fresh food products like meat, poultry and seafood produced by small and medium-sized companies of the South American country.

Through specific campaigns, the government also seeks to promote relations between marketers of both countries and promote Argentine wine on the Chinese market, which consumes 16 million hectoliters (422 million gallons) of wine a year, almost half of which is sold online, according to Alibaba statistics.
