At Least 19 Dead in Argentina Bus Crash

BUENOS AIRES – At least 19 people were killed and a score of others were injured early Saturday in a bus accident in the western Argentine province of Mendoza, police confirmed to EFE.

The Chilean-bound bus operated by Santiago-based company Turbus crashed in the Andes mountains near Aconcagua Park for reasons that are now under investigation.

A total of 40 people, mostly Argentines and three of them minors, were riding in the vehicle, Turbus said.

“Personnel from the company immediately traveled to the site to attend to the emergency and assist” police and paramedics at the scene, it added.

Police told EFE that around 20 people were injured, all of whom were transported to several nearby medical facilities.

Several passengers told local media that the bus was traveling at high speed at the time of the accident.
