Protesters Set Up 100 Soup Kitchens in Argentine Capital

BUENOS AIRES – Grassroots groups mounted 100 soup kitchens in Buenos Aires on Thursday to protest increasing poverty and joblessness in Argentina.

Activists set up shop at Buenos Aires landmarks to distribute rice-and-beef casseroles among the needy.

“We are seeing there is a loss of employment. This is the second time we organize soup kitchens because the government does not heed our demands,” Walter Cordoba, a leader of the Barrios de Pie (Neighborhoods Mobilized) organization, told EFE next to the Obelisk.

“There are 1.5 million newly poor people and the truth is that 40 percent of workers in Argentina are informal, are off-the-books workers who are not being paid on the record as they should be. That’s why we’re here,” he said.

Though the conservative government insists its harsh austerity measures are curbing inflation, Cordoba said that ordinary people have not enjoyed any gains.

“On the contrary, they are announced layoffs in the state, private economic activity is falling,” the activist said.
