Macri Pays Tribute to Argentine Independence Hero San Martin

BUENOS AIRES – Argentine President Mauricio Macri commemorated Wednesday’s 166th anniversary of the death of independence hero Jose de San Martin by making an appeal for unity.

Macri traveled to the western province of Mendoza to lay a wreath at the National Monument to the Andean Army, the force commanded by Gen. San Martin during the independence struggle.

Invoking what he called the principles of San Martin, the right-wing president said the change that began last December when he took office involves not only economic policy, but Argentina’s values.

“We have to be more united than ever because, unfortunately, there are leaders who always want to stick a spoke in the wheel, who don’t want the country to evolve,” Macri said.
