BUENOS AIRES – At least one person has died in a magnitude-5.9 earthquake that shook the northern Argentine province of Salta this Saturday.
According to the Metan fire brigade, a woman was killed when a school collapsed in the municipality of El Galpon, the area hit hardest by the temblor.
According to the Inpres seismology institute, the earthquake occurred at 8:33 a.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles).
Inpres said that the epicenter was located at 123 kilometers (76 miles) from the Salta capital and 51 kilometers (31 miles) from Metan, the nearest town.
The temblor, which lasted 15 seconds, was also felt in the neighboring provinces of Tucuman, Jujuy, Santiago del Estero and Catamarca, according to local media.
