SANTO DOMINGO – Dominican authorities on Thursday incinerated 1,297 kilos (2,856 lbs) of cocaine and other illegal drugs seized in raids earlier this month.
The haul included 1,236 kilos of powder cocaine, 60 kilos of marijuana and 678 grams (24 oz.) of crack cocaine, the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD) said.
All of the drugs were confiscated in police operations during the period of June 12-18.
The incineration, which took place at the headquarters of the Dominican army’s 1st Infantry Brigade, was witnessed by Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez and DNCD chief Edmundo Felix Pimentel, among other officials.
US authorities say that international drug traffickers use the Dominican Republic as a way station for shipments headed to North America and Europe.
