KINGSTON Jamaica is being pounded by strong winds and heavy rains from Hurricane Matthew, which is expected to reach the Caribbean island later in the day on Monday.
Residents, meanwhile, are scrambling to buy supplies and materials, especially in southeastern Jamaica, to board up windows and doors.
No turning back now. It is a matter of how long we have to wait this out, Local Government and Community Development Minister Desmond Mackenzie said.
The Category 4 hurricane is expected to make landfall in eastern Jamaica packing winds of 215 kph (134 mph).
Authorities are concerned about the towns of Port Royal, St. Andrew and the eastern side of Kingston, where the government has sent buses to evacuate residents.
Temporary storm shelters have already received the first evacuees.
On its way to Jamaica, Hurricane Matthew has dumped heavy rains on several Caribbean countries.
