MEXICO CITY – Doctors at a rural hospital in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca extracted a uterus with the fetus inside to save the life of the mother and the baby.
Juana Reyes Melchor was more than eight months pregnant when she was admitted, hospital director Marco Antonio Martinez Castellanos said Wednesday.
Though the pregnancy had been free of complications, Reyes complained of intense pain in the pelvic region and of bleeding and doctors found that she was suffering from high blood pressure.
They also detected a problem with the placenta that could have caused the mother to hemorrhage during delivery.
To avoid risking the lives of the mother and the baby, the physicians decided to remove the uterus with the fetus inside and then extract the baby.
Reyes and her baby daughter have already been discharged, the hospital said.
