Missing Woman Found Dead after Taking Taxi in Mexico State

MEXICO CITY – Rosalinda Esthefanie Morales Garcia, 29, has been found lifeless in the Acambay municipality of Mexico state after she got in a taxi and then “went missing for five days,” local authorities announced on Monday.

“As a result of several investigation and search operations, the body was found of the 29-year-old woman reported missing last Dec. 14 in Metepec municipality,” said the District Attorney’s Office of Mexico state (FGJEM).

The body was found Sunday afternoon at 1 kilometer (two-thirds of a mile) from the Acambay Bypass in the town of Detiña in Acambay municipality.

FGJEM personnel carried out several procedures to find her, including the questioning of close friends and relatives, the activation of protocols for finding missing persons, and a review of security cameras in the area.

“As the investigation progressed, we were able to establish that one of the principal lines of enquiry was a relationship the victim had been in for several months,” the statement said.

However, it added, “as we continue this line of enquiry and wrap up others that are underway, the investigation will be further strengthened or discarded by other personnel of the state District Attorney’s Office.”

According to the local press, the last thing known about Morales Garcia, who worked at the Toluca Water and Sanitation organization, was through a message on WhatsApp, in which she alerted a friend that the driver would not let her get out of the taxi.

The young woman, mother of a 6-month-old baby, even gave details of the kind of car it was and the license plate number, though neither the taxi nor the driver has been located.

Meanwhile, the burnt body of the woman was found dumped on a parcel of land.

Mexico state, the most populous in the country, has a soaring violence rate and an extraordinary number of femicides.

This is not the first case in Mexico this year in which a woman has turned up dead after riding on a private transport vehicle.

The young Mexican Mara Fernanda Castilla died last September after taking a Cabify in the central state of Puebla.

She was kidnapped, taken to a motel, sexually assaulted and then murdered by the driver, who threw her body down a ravine, according to the state District Attorney’s Office.
