Reputed Drug Kingpin Arrested in Mexican Resort Town

MEXICO CITY – A reputed crime boss was detained in the Caribbean resort town of Playa del Carmen, the Mexican Attorney General’s Office said Thursday.

The detainee, identified as Humberto Leonardo “N,” is thought to be involved in drug trafficking and protection rackets in the central state of Morelos, the AG Office said in a statement.

The arrest was carried out by army troops and federal law enforcement agents, according to the statement, which said that the team also seized 1.8 kilos of methamphetamine, a precision scale and a quantity of cash.

Media outlets identified the man in custody as Humberto Leonardo Flores and linked him to the Los Rojos criminal organization.

Playa del Carmen and nearby Cancun have witnessed violent clashes this year that authorities attribute to turf battles among rival gangs.

A shootout in January inside a discotheque in Playa del Carmen left five people dead.
