MEXICO CITY – Nine people were killed and 16 others injured Wednesday when a bus collided with a tractor-trailer in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas, Mexican authorities said.
The accident occurred around 7:00 am on a stretch of road between the state capital, Ciudad Victoria, and the town of Jaumave, Tamaulipas emergency services coordinator Pedro Granados told EFE.
Both drivers were among the dead.
The injured were taken to various nearby hospitals and some of them are in critical condition, meaning that the death toll could rise, Granados said.
While the truck flipped over yet remained on the road, the bus plunged more than 50 meters (164 feet) to the bottom of a ravine, the official said.
The cause of the collision, which forced authorities to shut down the road for several hours, is under investigation, Granados said.
The accident happened shortly after the bus made a stop in Ciudad Victoria en route from Mexico City to Reynosa, just across the border from McAllen, Texas.
