MEXICO CITY – Seven people were killed and 10 others injured when a parking garage under construction in the western section of Mexico City collapsed, emergency management officials said.
“The search and rescue work has concluded, without locating any other trapped people. The final report is 7 dead and 10 injured,” Mexico City emergency management chief Fausto Lugo said in a Twitter post.
The structural collapse occurred Monday in Colonia Olivar de los Padres, a district in the Mexico City borough of Alvaro Obregon.
The injured construction workers were transported to different hospitals in the capital, officials said.
“We are saddened by the deaths of the workers in the collapse that occurred in Alvaro Obregon; all our support and solidarity goes out to the families,” Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera tweeted.
The Federal District Attorney’s Office said in a statement that it was investigating the collapse.
Initial indications are that a steel beam being lifted by a crane hit the structure, causing the partially built garage to collapse, the DA’s office said.
