RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazilian Federal Police officers busted a drug smuggling ring organized by employees at the Rio de Janeiro international airport, arresting at least 24 suspects, officials said on Tuesday.
The police operation targeted 36 suspects, all of whom are the subjects of arrest warrants.
As of 9:00 am, Federal Police officers had arrested 24 suspects, including two customs agents, on drug trafficking, smuggling and liquor theft charges.
The investigation of airport employees was opened in February, when Federal Police officers found a suitcase containing 37 kilos of cocaine that was bound for Amsterdam.
The suspects, the majority of them airport and airline employees, also allegedly stole liquor from commercial airliners and sold it to gangs specializing in moving contraband.
