RIO DE JANEIRO – Police killed 10 suspected members of a gang that specialized in robbing residences in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest city, police spokesmen said Monday.
Officers arrived as the gang was trying to open a safe at a residence in Morumbi, one of the priciest districts in Sao Paulo.
Three adults and a boy were in the residence when the robbers arrived.
The gang’s lookouts spotted some movements outside the building and warned the robbers, who fled without stealing anything.
A special police unit intercepted the gang members, who were in two vehicles, setting off a shootout that left 10 of the criminals dead.
No police officers were wounded in the shootout, officials said.
The gang members, who were armed with four rifles, had been under investigation for some time in connection with the burglaries of at least 20 residences in upscale Sao Paulo neighborhoods, the Sao Paulo Public Safety Secretariat said.
