Russian Vice-Consul in Rio Shoots and Kills Alleged Robber

RIO DE JANEIRO Ė The Russian vice-consul in Rio de Janeiro shot and killed on Thursday a man who seemingly tried to rob him, on the Avenue das Americas in Barra da Tijuca, home to most facilities of the Olympic Games, Brazilian police reported.

The 60-year-old diplomat, who practices jiu-jitsu, said that he was reacting to the armed robbery and that the shot was fired while both men wrestled over the gun, according to the Homicide Division in Rio de Janeiro.

The shot killed the alleged robber on the spot.

The vice-consul, whose identity was not disclosed, recalled that he was stuck in a traffic jam in the car with his wife and daughter when two motorcyclists approached his vehicle and that one of the alleged robbers smashed the carís window with a gun.

The incident took place on the Avenue das Americas, the main avenue in Barra de Tijuca, where most facilities hosting the Olympic Games are found, on the eve of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
