At Least 42 Dead in Bus Accident in Central Ecuador

QUITO – At least 42 people died Sunday when the bus they were riding in plunged off the road into an abyss near Lake Yambo in Ecuador’s central Andean highlands, the Ecuadorian Red Cross, or CRE, reported.

Eleven other people were taken from the wreckage alive, but with serious injuries, and transported to hospitals in the region, an official with the CRE said after noting that the accident occurred about 3:30 a.m. local time (0830 GMT).

There were reported to be 53 people, in all, on board the vehicle at the time of the crash.

According to initial reports, apparently the bus flipped over on a mountain curve and slid or rolled into the abyss about 30 kilometers (19 miles) north of the central Andean city of Ambato.

The bus belongs to the Turismo Oriental passenger transport cooperative and covered the route between the southern city of Cuenca and Quito, in the north.
