Eight Dead in Ecuador Bus Crash

QUITO – At least eight people were killed and 22 others injured in a bus accident Tuesday in Cotopaxi, a province in Ecuador’s Andean region, media outlets said.

The bus, which was carrying some 60 people, went off a highway and plunged into a ravine around 2:30 a.m. in the Apagua district.

Most of the injured were transported initially to a hospital in the nearby town of Zumbahua and later to the General Hospital in the city of Latacunga.

The bodies of the dead were taken to the morgue in La Mana, Cotopaxi.

Media accounts said that an excessive number of passengers and foggy conditions could have helped bring about the accident. The bus left the city of Quevedo at 10:45 p.m. Monday bound for Latacunga.

However, police have not yet released an official report on the accident. EFE
