QUITO – A 22-year-old woman suffering from hypertension has given birth by Cesarean section to quadruplets in Ecuador in the 31st week of pregnancy, Isidro Ayora Maternity Hospital director Humberto Navas said Sunday.
Digna Moran had to undergo the C-section when her blood pressure rose to a high level, Navas told Efe, adding that the procedure was done Saturday at around 8:45 a.m.
Three of the babies, who were conceived naturally, weighed 1,500 grams (about 3 lbs, 5 oz.) at birth and the fourth weighed 1,300 grams (2 1/2 lbs).
The quadruplets are “in good condition,” but they are in the intensive care unit, Navas said.
Three of the babies were on one placenta and the fourth was on another, the hospital director said.
The mother will stay at the hospital as long as the babies remain there, Navas said.
Moran and the quadruplets’ father, Edgar Godos, 25, are from Loja, a province in southern Ecuador.
