QUITO – One inmate died and six other people were injured Wednesday when three grenades went off inside a prison in the Ecuadorian coastal city of Guayaquil, police said.
The blasts occurred in one of the prison’s kitchens as a meal was being prepared, Teleamazonas television reported, citing a police source.
Inmates’s families gathered at the prison gate in search of information about their loved ones, while the police source told Teleamazonas that authorities would issue a full statement on the incident later Wednesday.
The network reported that at least three ambulances left the prison carrying the injured to a hospital in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s biggest city.
Litoral prison has the largest inmate population of any penal institution in Ecuador. EFE
