QUITO A bus accident on Monday in the southern Ecuadorian province of Azuay killed three people and injured about 40, media outlets reported.
Teleamazonas television said the dead included two 19-year-old women and a boy of 8.
Patricio Ochoa, director of the Gualaceo hospital, told the network that between eight and 10 injured people had been transported to the hospital in Cuenca, the capital of Azuay, because of the seriousness of their injuries.
Edwin Zumba, a passenger who emerged unhurt from the accident, said that the driver was going very fast, he lost his concentration and the brakes failed, the combination apparently leading to the crash, with the bus going off the road and into a ravine.
Teleamazonas reported that health authorities say some of those hurt in the accident may not survive due to the extensive nature of their injuries. EFE
