QUITO – Five children died and another was reported missing when they were swept away by floodwaters from a river in Lumbisi, a town near Quito, Ecuadorian police said.
The children, who were between the ages of 10 and 11, were fishing on Monday when they were carried away by the San Pedro River, which overflowed its banks due to the heavy rains in the area.
Police and firefighters recovered five bodies and are searching for the missing child.
The preliminary investigation found that the children went to “the banks of the river with a housewife after school to catch fish,” the Quito fire department said.
The rains in the Andean highlands may have caused the “rapid rise” in the river’s level, the fire department said. EFE
