QUITO – Two firefighters were killed and three others injured while putting out a blaze in the Puembo district of Quito, Ecuador, the city government said.
Jhonatan David Nasimba Ambas, 19, and Jhonatan Paul Dionicio Vasquez, 20, died on Monday.
The fire had started on Sunday and been brought under control, but the wind restarted the blaze.
“The possible cause of the deaths was a combination of suffocation and burns,” Quito Mayor Mauricio Rodas told the El Comercio newspaper’s online edition.
Rodas expressed his condolences to the families of the dead firefighters.
Two firehouses will be named for the dead firefighters, who will be honored at a memorial service on Tuesday, Rodas said.
About 100 firefighters, police and emergency management personnel were deployed in the area affected by the fire.
