Two Die in Crash of Air Force Plane in Ecuador

QUITO – Two people were killed when a small plane belonging to the air force crashed Wednesday in Santa Elena, a province in western Ecuador, the General Civil Aviation Administration, or DGAC, said in a Twitter post.

“Small plane FAE 026 crashed near the airport in Salinas, 2 fatalities were reported,” the DGAC said.

The plane, which was operated by the military aviation academy, went down at 7:40 a.m. while on a training flight to the city of Salinas, the air force said in a statement.

President Rafael Correa expressed his condolences in a Twitter post.

“Training plane T34 had an accident in Salinas. Captain E and Cadet R died. The Fatherland mourns them. Our love to the families,” the president said.

An investigation team is being put together to examine the crash, the air force said.
