Israel Antiquities Authority Discovers 4,000-Year-Old Decapitated Toads

JERUSALEM – Archaeologists found nine decapitated toads that could be a part of a 4,000-year-old Canaanite’s burial kit, the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) said on Monday.

The agency also revealed the discovery of entire vessels filled with food that could be from a funeral rite near Jerusalem’s biblical zoo and will be presented on Oct. 18.

“For an archaeologist, finding tombs that were intentionally sealed in antiquity is a priceless treasure, because they are a time capsule that allows us to encounter objects almost just as they were originally left,” the excavation’s directors, Shua Kisilevitz and Zohar Turgeman-Yaffe, said in an IAA statement.

Both archaeologists said that placing oblations in the tombs had been common as part of the belief in the afterlife.
