Taiwan Launches First Homegrown Satellite from US Air Base

TAIPEI – Taiwan launched on Friday Formosat-5, the first completely homegrown observation satellite, from the Vandenberg air base in the United States, the Taiwanese National Space Organization (NSO) said.

The octagonal satellite – 2 meters (6.5 feet) high and 1.2 meters in diameter – cost some 3 billion Taiwanese dollars ($100 million), and made contact with a station in Norway at 4:13 am, the NSO said.

According to the NSO – which is part of the National Applied Research Laboratories of Taiwan that was established in June 2003 – the satellite is equipped with Complementary Metal-oxide-semiconductor sensors to observe the Earth.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen called the launch a great leap that demonstrates Taiwan’s technological progress and that will boost the country’s space industry.
