Recruitment Efforts:: We are currently seeking applicants for the position of Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Criminal Division. One or more positions may be filled from this vacancy announcement in either St. Thomas or St. Croix. Applicants must indicate the location(s) to which they are applying.
About the Office: The District of the Virgin Islands (USAO) includes a main office located in St. Thomas and a branch office located in St. Croix. The District comprises the entirety of the U.S. Virgin Islands which consists of three primary islands: St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John, and associated smaller cays in the general vicinity of the shores of the primary islands. The United States Attorney's Office prosecutes federal offenses and defends the U.S. Government's interest in civil cases. Given its location, the District of Virgin Islands handles significant narcotics offenses, public corruption matters, human trafficking cases, violent gun crime, tax prosecutions, immigration, and white collar frauds.
Responsibilities and Opportunity Offered: The USAO is currently seeking experienced criminal prosecutors for the District. These positions may be located in either St. Thomas or St. Croix. The selected candidate will be responsible for handling a variety of criminal cases including public corruption, white collar fraud, violent gun crime, narcotics trafficking offenses, tax, and immigration related cases. Experience in public corruption, white collar fraud, or violent gun/gang investigations and prosecutions is highly desirable. The applicant selected will work closely with federal and local law enforcement agencies and must have a demonstrated track record of working collaboratively with federal and local law enforcement.
Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any jurisdiction), and have at least one year post-J.D. experience. Preferred applicants will possess superior oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills and the capacity to function in a highly demanding environment with minimal guidance. Additionally, it is desired that the successful candidate have strong academic credentials and at least three years of post J.D. experience.
Applicants will also be expected to conduct their own legal research and writing and will be substantially self-sufficient in preparing day-to-day correspondence and pleadings. Applicants must also demonstrate excellent computer literacy skills to include experience with automated research on the Internet, electronic court filing, and electronic e-mail and word processing systems.
Travel: Regular travel between the main office in St. Thomas and branch office in St. Croix may be required. Other occasional travel may also be required.
Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorneys' pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number years of professional attorney experience and availability of funds. The current recruiting range is $45,027 through $132,849 plus locality rate.
Location: Vacancies may be located in either St. Thomas or St. Croix, and placement will be determined at the time of selection.
Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses will not be authorized.
