TOKYO Ė Spainís King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia will be on their first state visit to Japan from April 4-7, the Japanese Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday.
During their four-day stay, Felipe VI, who assumed the throne in 2014, and Queen Letizia will meet with Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, as well as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Japanís Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a press conference.
Suga said they hope the visit will further promote friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries.
Suga also recalled that Spain and Japan have a long history going back 460 years and underlined the strong ties between the Japanese and the Spanish royal families.
This is Felipe VIís first visit to Japan as king, although he has already visited the country thrice earlier, in 1990, 1998 and 2005.
