VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis started on Wednesday to receive messages in different languages wishing him a happy birthday as he is about to turn 80 on Dec. 17, to which he jokingly responded by saying that early birthday wishes brings bad luck.
“I’ll tell you something that will make you laugh. In my country, expressing greetings ahead of time brings bad luck,” the Argentine pontiff said.
Francis blew out a candle placed on a large cake made in the form of the number 80, which was prepared by one of his assistants.
No special events will be held to celebrate the pontiff’s birthday and he will proceed with his usual agenda by holding a mass in Rome.
Although the Pope will not be celebrating his birthday officially, the Vatican allocated a series of email addresses in eight different languages to receive birthday wishes for him.
